LSA Jumpstart

The LSA Course Design Jumpstart is a hands-on workshop that helps graduate student instructors teaching online asynchronous courses build their online Summer courses with confidence. This workshop occurs towards the end of the Spring semester each year, and is co-facilitated with the Instructional Design Collaborative.

Workshop Overview

LSA Jumpstart takes place in a collaborative in-person setting. Participants plan their courses, develop inclusive teaching strategies, and create meaningful ways to connect with and support all students.

Participants attend four sessions, which occur over a four week period in April. Each session is held for an hour and a half and facilitated by experienced instructors.

As part of the experience, participants get access to adaptable Canvas templates, sample syllabi, course planning templates, and other practical tools to support online instruction.

Registration

Registration opens in early spring annually.

As part of the registration form, you can opt in to a virtual consultation when you register for Jumpstart if you do not yet have a syllabus or course learning outcomes, or if you want to get started before April.

Past participant quotes

“This has been one of the most valuable on campus workshops I have attended. I learned a great deal of useful information and walked away with many practical tools. Best of all was the dedicated work time on my individual course with knowledgeable course designers on hand to give advice. I cannot recommend this experience highly enough for those who are developing online courses. Thank you!”

“I really appreciated the hands-on aspects of the workshop, and the pattern of mini-lectures followed by personal work and/or group discussions. I also very much appreciated the space provided to brainstorm ideas and discuss questions and concerns related to teaching an online asynchronous course. Thank you for being available for individual consultations during the workshop!”

Workshop Facilitators

The LSA Jumpstart Workshop facilitators come from both the Instructional Design Collaborative (IDC) and the TA Training & Support Team. The facilitators pictured below rotate between sessions and facilitate a mix of mini-lectures, group and partner discussions, hands-on work time, and individual consultations during each session.
